Flying Videos
I bought a Drift Ghost-X recorder and recorded video with the camera strapped to my landing gear and to my wing strut. I liked it so much I eventually bought a second.
It will be an ongoing project to capture video while flying and produce
segments for this site. As I do so I will add them here.
The footage is shot
using a wide angle lens, so like your car mirror objects are closer
than they appear.
I haven't figured out how to get the waviness out of the videos yet, but I'm working on it! I purchased video editing software that has stabilization, but that isn't working for me as yet.
Enjoy
2020-12-28 Cockpit view of Silverdale 01:54
Cockpit view.
A quick flight along the Silverdale waterfront. This is part of the first of
two flights of the day with the Red Biplane.
The video looks like one of those Hollywood productions where they place the
characters in a fake vehicle and display a video behind them to make it look
like they are really out in the vehicle and not on a set.
2020-12-28 Two Cameras - Closed Loop 03:17
Two cameras, side-by-side views. One camera aimed straight ahead as usual, and
one aimed at the cockpit. You can watch me pilot Rufus and see where we're
going at the same time.
NOTES:
- It's 38 degrees!
- At 00:45
I see the Red Biplane on the far taxiway. I waggle my wings and we decide
via radio to fly together. I landed to wait for him.
- The cockpit camera
is also wide angle - my legs aren't as stumpy as they look!
- The
vibrations that the cockpit camera experiences cause some funny waviness in
the video. It is even stranger in parts that are not included in the video!
2020-10-29 Southern Hood Canal 04:00
Flight along the northern shore of southern Hood Canal. Great reflections of
the clouds in the calm water! The Red Biplane is hard to find most of the
time, but is there for much of the video.
Shown at 4x normal speed.
2020-10-29 Lake Cushman 02:49
Flight along the shores of Lake Cushman. Reasonably calm winds make for a
great flight. The Red Biplane is in and out of the video.
Shown at 4x
normal speed.
2020-10-02 Flight over Mason Lake 05:56
Part of the flight is at low altitude, so I'm careful not to overfly any
boats. It's hard to see it but the Red Biplane is flying in front of me.
2020-10-02 Through the canyon of the Union River Reservoir 02:05
Spectacular part of the flight. The only thing that would have improved it
would have been if the day had been clear instead of hazy.
2020-09-26 Flying locally with a friend 10:50
My first time flying with the Red Biplane. Due to technical problems we were
unable to communicate by radio so we flew carefully, especially when the other
wasn't in sight. This video mostly highlights the Red Biplane.
2020-08-09 Flying Locally 05:53
Excerpts from flying around. I had the camera mounted on a wing strut. At times
this caused excessively wavy video when the vibrations were just right.
The take-off and landing are at normal viewing speed; everything in between is
at 4x normal speed. Since it was bumpy that makes for some really bouncy
video!
